A calculator or log tables allow you to evaluate logs.
For example   log 48  = 1.68124;      log 49 = 1.69019;
                         ln 49 = 3.89182;        ln 48 = 3.87120; 
The number in the answer to the left of the decimal point is call the characteristic
and the number to the right is the mantissa.

So in the case of ln 49 = 3.89182  the 3 is the character and .89182 is the mantissa.
